Lady Gaga's mother speaks out about the singer's bully hell as a child

Cynthia Germanotta united with Gaga as they did their bit to stop bullying at the launch of the singer’s Born This Way Foundation.

‘Growing up she faced many struggles because of her individuality and, as a result, often experienced meanness and cruelty,’ the 57-year-old told Harvard University.

Hailing 25-year-old Gaga’s efforts to share her troubles with her fans – the Little Monsters – the proud mother added: ‘She’s talked very publicly about these and other struggles in a real and personal way and people have responded to that message.’

Taking up the role as president of Gaga’s foundation, she said: ‘Today is a special day for my daughter and I as we share with everyone something we’ve been working on for almost a year and have been talking about as mother and daughter for much longer.

‘As my daughter’s career took off and she developed more and more reach, we started having serious conversations about ways to give back. She’s always been very tuned in to youth culture.’

Gaga said having the support of her mother at the launch was ‘one of the best days of my life’. ‘I believe that human kind, as a whole, can change the world,’ she said.

‘If you have revolutionary potential, you must make the world a better place and use it. This is about transformative change in culture.’

She then claimed she and her mother were off ‘to go have some wine and celebrate because it was such a success’.

Gaga has previously revealed her torment at the hands of bullies.

‘School bullies called me fat and laughed at my appearance. I had a very big nose, very curly brown hair and I was overweight,’ she said.
